At least that’s what I told myself when someone suggested that I try meditation as a stress reducer. Anyone who knows me, knows that I move fast, think fast, talk fast…I do things with speed. And most days I have very little patience to sit still long enough to close my eyes and drift off to lala land! But what the heck, I’m up for trying something new.
The first meditation I listened to offered a scientific basis for changing the brain pathways if done 55 days consecutively. I cannot lie. I did feel more grounded, rested and a little restored. It became part of my daily routine and at this point, if I don’t listen in, it feels like something is missing.
Meditation has proven benefits https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/12-benefits-of-meditation particularly when combined with breath work. It can lower blood pressure, slow breathing, calm the central nervous system, reduce anxiety and increase relaxation. It also helps improve concentration and sleep and can also help with pain management. The benefits are many and worth exploring.
My own experience has been positive. I try to meditate at night before bed and if possible between clients as a mental reset. I’m telling you it works. I feel energized, more focused (most of the time) and generally more grounded.
There are many online apps you can start with such as Headway, Calm, Aura and Insight Timer which is free. Following the prompts of a soothing voice makes it easier for beginners. Here is one, courtesy of moi, that includes progressive relaxation for a full body release of muscle tension.
If you think you’re too busy to meditate, you’re exactly the person who could benefit the most. I get it—I resisted too. But after giving it a real shot, I realized that it’s less about “emptying your mind” and more about giving your brain a break.
And here’s the kicker: meditation doesn’t have to be long. Even five minutes of intentional breathing and focus can shift your energy, reduce stress, and help you feel more in control of your day.
If I, someone who thrives on speed and movement, can make meditation part of my routine, you can too. Give it a try—you might just surprise yourself.
