Gergana Markov, MBA, MS, LPC

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) trained therapist

Trauma | Couples | Men | Executive Professionals | Stress Management | Life Transitions

You may be wondering if therapy can help your situation, especially when you’ve moved through so many previous challenges on your own. I can definitely relate.

My story spans changes in continents, cultures, and careers—much of which I navigated without a therapist to support me. Then I met someone who changed both my perspective and my life.

Years ago, I found myself tired and uninspired. Even though I had a successful career, it was no longer satisfying, and I began to search for something meaningful to pursue. During that period, I met the founder of a non-profit working to help refugee women adjust to life in the United States. I was in awe of her generosity and profoundly moved by the stories of the families she cared for—in part because they reminded me of my own journey as an immigrant from Bulgaria.

Quite a bit of fear and confusion can be associated with blending different worlds. Personally, I remember feeling so isolated after moving to the US in the early 90s. I needed help, but was too afraid to ask questions. I desired connection, but was unsure who to trust. I felt misplaced, misunderstood, hopeless, and alone. Fearing judgment and rejection, I retreated. I began to believe that acceptance required conformity, and lost touch with myself along the way.

The refugee families involved with my friend’s non-profit experienced much different outcomes. Why? Because they didn’t have to go it alone. This revelation sparked a new sense of purpose in me: to become the person I wish I had in my life during my most difficult moments of transition and change.

As we work together in therapy, you will find an accepting space to navigate change and share your story while feeling valued and encouraged. My desire is to be an anchoring presence for those who struggle to stay afloat, and to restore hope in healing by empowering my clients to live more fulfilling lives.

Areas of Focus

I have clinical training and in-depth experience counseling individuals of all ages, working with couples, and exploring parent-child dynamics in a variety of settings. Additionally, I am an EMDR trained therapist and utilize trauma-informed interventions in my practice. A passionate LGBTQ+ ally, I also have specialized training in affirmative therapy for gender and sexuality issues, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, and Safe Conversations for couples and communities.

I have been married for 30 years and am quite proud of the woman my daughter has become. When I am not in the office, you can find me on the trails, in the studio, or in the kitchen. I love hiking with my husband, yoga with friends, and cuddles with my rescue pit mix, Paige.

Whether pursued or imposed upon us, change is challenging—but it’s also a pathway to personal growth and enrichment. It certainly has been for me. I would be honored to walk with you on your journey of self-discovery.
