Are you someone who loves to plan, prepare, and gather all the things you might need, only to realize you never actually start?
You buy the journal and the beautiful pens because you’re ready to begin expressing yourself through art, but the first page stays blank because you’re afraid of messing it up. You get the gym membership, the new shoes, and the matching water bottle, but somehow never make it past the first week. You research every detail before making a move—nutrition plans, new hobbies, self-help books—but when it’s time to begin, you freeze.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And you’re definitely not lazy.
Preparation feels good because it gives us the sense of progress without the risk of failure. We convince ourselves that if we collect a little more information or organize things just a bit better, we’ll finally feel ready.
But readiness is a myth. You can’t think your way into it.
Progress doesn’t come from planning; it comes from doing.
Often, what looks like “getting ready” is really fear in disguise. Fear of imperfection. Fear of judgment. Fear of disappointment.
The blank page feels safer than one we might ruin. The unopened gym door feels safer than walking in and feeling vulnerable.
Perfectionism tricks us into thinking we’re protecting ourselves, but in reality, it keeps us from moving forward. Preparation becomes a shield against discomfort, but also against growth.
The first attempt doesn’t need to be beautiful or successful. It just needs to exist.
Start with messy art. Do a five-minute workout. Write the awkward first paragraph.
Taking one small, imperfect step moves you out of preparation mode and into motion. Momentum builds in the act itself, not in the waiting.
Something changes when you start, even in a small way. You realize you don’t need to be ready to begin; you just need to be willing.
Willingness grows. One action leads to another. Soon, you’re no longer “preparing to start.” You’re already doing it.
Ask yourself:
You don’t need more notebooks or plans or perfect timing. You need permission—your own—to begin.
If fear, perfectionism, or self-doubt are keeping you stuck, therapy can help you explore what’s underneath and find your way forward.
You deserve more than potential. You deserve progress.
If you’re tired of feeling almost ready, I can help you uncover what’s holding you back and take that first small step forward.
