Step three, Style, is the funnest. Not sure funnest is a word but I’m going with it anyway. In previous blogs, I’ve written that there are three major steps in creating a magic space. Step one, EDIT, step two, ORGANIZE and step three, STYLE.
Style
Style is by far the most fun of the three steps! Styling a space is the roller coaster ride after the long wait in line, the best song on an old vinyl record or the fireworks grand finale. Relax, enjoy, continue to be thoughtful and finish your space in an exciting sexy way.
Style Common Mistakes
- The number one most common mistake of Styling is beginning to shop or acquire items before you make a very deliberate/thoughtful list of what you need. You spent a lot of energy in the Edit and Organize clearing out your space so it would be a shame to fill it back up again with items that do not serve you or your goals for the space!
- The second most common mistake of Style is not coming up with a color story for that space. Every space should have a clear color story (a couple of neutral colors + one accent color works best). Any new items brought into the space should be one of the colors in your color story. Here are some examples of simple color stories that really work. Let’s make some pretty happen!
- The third most common mistake is clients often forget to allow some of the space to remain, clear, clean, empty and devoid of stuff. They overfill the space. Empty space is necessary to allow the mind, brain, and eye to “rest” in between collections of pretty things in a space. Here is an example of a mantle that is not overly packed and has plenty of empty or unused space accentuating the collection of objects and art.
Style Tips
- Get inspired BEFORE you create a plan. See what like-minded folks are doing with their spaces. A great way to do this is to visit Pinterest and let the ideas start to flow! Create your own boards and start collecting images and ideas make you feel the happiest!
- Make a plan BEFORE you go shopping.
- Take the time to come up with your color story for a space and then stick to it!
- Don’t overfill your space and remember to allow for negative or empty space.
- Whenever possible use what you have.
Planning, thoughtfulness, and expressing yourself are key ideas in making some magic happen in your space. It’s YOUR space, so figure out what you love, feel inspired by and incorporate colors, objects and a room arrangement that feels like your best most free creative self! Let the fun begin and start the Style!
